Mental illness, marriage, mothers and daughters, relationships between sisters – Australian author Meg Mason deals with all these issues and more in her brilliant new novel, Sorrow and Bliss. As its title suggests, it is a mixture of darkness and light, humour and pathos. At its heart is the relationship between Martha and Patrick, which Meg calls both a love story and an anti-love story, as she gently reminds us that ‘a marriage is its own world’.
